Ready for Cascara Tea?  Cascara is the coffee berry, not the bean.  Packed with antioxidants and rich in potassium, magnesium, and iron, this amazing fruit is also a nootropic that supports brain health.

Cascara tea is a delicious alternative to green or black tea and a pleasant low caffeine alternative to coffee.

    • This is Lee's favorite tea; she drinks at least a cup a day.  Just enough caffeine to get you going, but not the full morning jolt.

Cascara, meaning husk or peel in Spanish, is the outer protective fruit of the coffee cherry. This sustainably sourced cascara originates from Las Lajas, an organic micromill located in Sabanilla de Alajuela in the Central Valley region of Costa Rica.

Where does cascara come from?  More than 80% of the worlds coffee is hand-picked and is harvested from ripe red coffee cherries. Inside of the coffee cherry are two seeds, which are dried and roasted, eventually becoming a cup of coffee. For every two tons of coffee cherries picked, nearly one ton of the outer peel and fruit, known as cascara, are discarded.

We were shocked when we realized how much cascara is thrown away, given it's delicious flavor and transformative potential. Cascara is normally sun-dried and is not processed further until it is brewed. Unlike coffee, cascara is minimally processed and tastes like dried fruit and citrus.

Where does cascara come from?  More than a thousand years prior to coffee's discovery and cultivation in Ethiopia and Yemen, the indigenous communities used cascara as an ingredient in an energy bar as well as an energizing tea.  Bevea has rescued this natural and overlooked resource because it's lightly caffeinated and makes a satisfying low in sugar tea. It is also full of antioxidants, vitamins, and low in calories.

How should I hot brew cascara?
Add 10 grams (1/3 oz) cascara tea to a tea pot or french press
Add 237 ml (8 oz) hot water to brewing vessel
Steep for a minimum of 4 minutes.
      Strain and enjoy!

      Can I cold brew cascara?
Add 30 grams (1 oz) cascara tea to a tea pot or french press
Add 700 ml (24 oz) cold water to brewing vessel
Steep for 12-16 hours in refrigerator
      Strain and enjoy!

What are the tasting notes?  Tasting notes include: Sweet and tart, tamarind, fig, cranberry, ginger spice, and pepper.

What to Expect

Add Ons are extra goodies to put in your box, usually paleo snacks but sometimes other supplements that we’ve found in our travels. They’re not Paleo Treats and sometimes they’re not strictly Paleo (some of them use maple syrup to sweeten, or coconut sugar). They’re all delicious and an excellent addition to your paleo food basket. They’re all either custom made for us, or they’re local brands we love.

This is a great way to get a taste of San Diego and support a couple of small businesses while eating clean & healthy.

Our goal is to find the cleanest ingredients where the products still taste really good, then make ‘em available to you. We add to and change what’s in this collection regularly, so keep an eye out for new offerings and if you see something you like don’t let it slip away!

Enjoy all the goodness!
