One of the biggest things you miss once you get started with the paleo diet is paleo cookies, right? While there are thousands of recipes on the internet that present themselves as paleo diet cookies, we wanted to lay out a few guidelines for you to help you on your journey to paleo dessert bliss.
Let’s start off with the basics.
The paleo diet is based on the idea that we evolved over the course of about 2 million years to eat a very natural diet; things that we could hunt and gather around us. Not included in that are any of the products of agriculture or of modern day food processing.
Now, that diet changes a bit based on where in the world you are (in cold areas people tend to eat more meat and animal products and in warmer areas people tend to eat more fruits and vegetables) but in general this diet removes gluten, grains, and dairy from our food chain.
This means that your standard cookie, made with flour (not paleo), butter (not paleo) and refined sugar (not paleo) is way out of the paleo cookie ballpark. It doesn’t mean that you can’t eat cookies, it just means you need to understand how to fit desserts into your new diet, and you need to learn how to evaluate paleo food.
The first step is to read the ingredients. It doesn’t matter if you’re making a paleo cookie recipe or buying cookies from a company like Paleo Treats®, you need to know what the ingredients are. If you see anything in there that has gluten, grain, or dairy in it, that automatically disqualifies them from being paleo diet cookies.
What are some of the usual suspects? Sweeteners like coconut sugar, raw sugar cane, maple syrup, are all off of the strict Paleo guidelines, butter or ghee (even if it’s grass fed) is out because it’s a dairy product, and even gluten free flour (which is usually based on white rice and whole grains) is off the “safe list.” If you see any of those in the ingredients in anything labeled “paleo diet cookies” or “paleo cookies”, look around for a substitute or look for another product. It can seem tough to start, but once you understand how great you can feel if you avoid gut irritants and the cost to your body if you do decide to give in and eat them, eating and living paleo gets a lot easier.
Now, we’re not telling you that you have to go strict paleo for the rest of your life. We’re not saying that paleo is the only way and that if you ever eat a cookie that’s not a paleo cookie you’ll go straight to hell. We’re just saying that if you choose to follow a paleo diet, don’t fool yourself into eating stuff that isn’t paleo just because you don’t want to squint a little to read the ingredients or because you don’t think it makes a difference.
You are responsible for your results, and they can be amazing if you can just stay in control of your desire to be the best, healthiest, most productive and happy human you have the potential to be.
We’ve found the stricter you are on the diet, the better your results. Some people can digest damn near everything without any ill effects, but most of us react negatively to many of the ingredients found in our diet, and because paleo diet cookies are a special and rare treat, we don’t want to have to jump off the wagon just because we’re already on the edge of the trail, if you know what I mean.
That wraps it up for what to look for when you start to crave paleo cookies, please feel free to browse our totally Paleo-safe catalog and enjoy the sweet fruits of our labors; some of the best paleo diet cookies on the planet.
