Rico's Rules

Rico's eating habits are very public, quite odd, and amongst those of us lucky enough to know him, legendary. His appetite for chicken waffles, for Mustang Bars (and generally any desserts), and for unending boxes of Chinese takeout is without parallel.

Paleo & Food Preservation

Kimchee makes my tongue smile.

Guest author Alexis Goertz teaches us about the ancestral art of food fermentation as a means of preserving seasonal produce. Fermentation not only preserves your food nearly indefinitely, but it also has the added benefit of loading your diet with probiotic bacteria, increasing the bioavailability of the nutrients in your food, while simultaneously enriching your palate with delicious new flavors.

Blood sugar levels and Paleo

Pink sugar doughnuts; terrible for blood sugar levels.

7 Pillars: Sleep

Second Pillar of Paleo: Sleep

Sleep is usually looked upon as a given, as something you don’t need to learn how to do.  Because it is innate to each of us and the immediate effects of lack of sleep are not apparent, we often don’t value enough this important Pillar.  Let’s see if looking at Sleep from another angle can convince you of the value of 8 dark and quiet hours.

Paleo and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis and Paleo, this is an X-ray showing the skull and spine.

When people find out you follow the Paleo diet, one of the main questions or concerns is about your calcium intake, or at least it was for many of the non-paleo peeps in my life. “Wait, you don’t eat cheese or drink milk? What about your calcium?” I knew that there was more to keeping my bones healthy than drinking cow’s milk, so I investigated.

What is Paleo?

A rippingly healthy diet, here's a quick guide to what Paleo is.

You see "Paleo" and you think "long haired dirty caveman." You think "dinosaurs" (completely wrong by the way, by about 63 million years.) Maybe you think "skinny stuck up hipsters." That's a little closer, but it still doesn't cover what this "Paleo" thing is.

Is Wine Paleo?

Wine ain't Paleo, but that doesn't mean you can't drink it.

The short answer?  No.  However, ahem...If you are going to indulge in an alcoholic drink, most Paleo peeps will tell you that your best bet is to stick with wine. Many of the Pioneers of Paleo agree that wine is the closest thing to paleo-friendly alcohol. After all, it’s made from grapes, which our ancestors definitely consumed.

Eating Out Paleo

Candice DeForest working through a Paleo meal at her favorite restaurant. When I transitioned to a paleo lifestyle after 10+ years of being a vegetarian, the first meal I ate out was a chicken salad. I distinctly remember every bland bite of it (grilled chicken, spinach, a few other forgettable veggies, and olive oil as dressing), wondering if this would become the new norm for dining out as my newly paleo self.
